Believe You/Me – Photography, Video and Installation by Monstrosity Director Philip Soliman

Image: In Between by Philip Soliman, Digital Print

On Friday June 25, from 6-9pm, Monstrosity Director Philip Soliman launches his solo exhibition of photography, video and installation entitled Believe You/Me.

Philip Soliman uses the traditional “documentary” media of video and photography, combined with immersive installations, to ask questions about human beings, and our fundamental beliefs about ourselves, each other and the world.

His solo show Believe You/Me brings together three of his current projects.

*In My Bedroom is a life-size surrealist recreation of the artist’s bedroom in cardboard and paper, with an unending torrent of the world’s horrors playing on a cardboard TV.

*The Facebook Photography Project is the artist’s ambitious attempt to photograph every one of his Facebook friends, as a way of testing the truth of the website’s claim that it “helps you connect and share with the people in your life.” In this exhibition, Philip shows selected images from the project, with the ultimate goal of publishing a physical ‘Face Book’ to bring friendship back into the warm, analogue world.

*You are Always Falling explores the subconcious and how it routinely intrudes on the mundane physical world in surprising and disturbing ways. Our rigidly established empirical versus rational ideas on human nature and the universe are overlaid and analysed through digital manipulation of captured images.

Believe You/Me runs from June 25 – July 16, and is open from 10-6, every day except Tuesday. The launch is sponsored, as always, by the amazing Ascella Pure Organic Wines. Please help them support the Sydney arts scene by ordering their superb wine from their website.
